The Making of ‘Africa’

Production Details

The story of the making of an epic, eight hours on the ‘Dark’ continent… This is the account of an ambitious project to bring an old story to life. It’s a tale of how a tight-knit group of highly motivated and talented people overcame huge differences, to bring an epic series of 8 hours to the screen.

We reveal the scope of the project, its time scale, its logistics and the number of people involved, a group of dedicated programme makers who have Africa in their hearts. These programme makers have all come from different walks of life and very different corners of the TV industry. For the first time ever, different film-making talents have been drawn together by a passion for a country and its wildlife, to tell a different story.

From within this union came new techniques, a drive to film things never seen before, new animals, new people, new places and new thoughts. Quiet, intimate moments of directors trying desperately to both understand and illustrate the lives of people from a very different world. Here is a film of the battle to bring the nature of Africa to the homes of millions, to show the struggle and emotion of life on a continent where many things have hardly changed for thousands of years.
