Shark Island with Nigel Marven

Production Details

Nigel Marven explores Cocos Island – the real life Treasure Island and home to some of the greatest shark spectacles on the planet.

Cocos Island is the largest uninhabited in the world. Jacques Cousteau said it was “the most beautiful island in the world.” Michael Crichton wrote “Jurassic Park” with it in mind and Robert Louis Stevenson is thought to have based his classic “Treasure Island” on it. For one month during the peak shark season, Nigel stays on a live-aboard dive boat under the great limestone cliffs of the Island.

First Nigel explores the island to find out about the animals that have managed to make this remote outpost their home. Spending a night on this deserted island he discovers the clues to its mysterious past, and a unique fauna adapted to life here.

Then he sets out to discover what draws the huge numbers of sharks and rays to the island. After exploring the coral gardens and sea cliffs with his SCUBA gear, Nigel takes a state of the art deep sea submersible to get close to the action – diving 1500 feet to a series of undersea mounts.
